Lazy Days

Ok ... lazy days are for:

hanging out with the ones you love ... or like ... or sometimes merely tolerate just for the sake of some company
dancing wildly in your lounge room to dub step or london grime
making faces in the mirror
a hot steamy bowl of noodles ... the kind the man at the store pre-empts with a "maybe too strong for non-asians" .. the kind served with a plate of crispy bean shoots and cabbage ... the kind at places where the condiments are just as important

ice cold bevies at your local pub

laughing and smiling ... wryly ... in general

 
Aah ... lazy days!! May you have many of them this year.

Wild Horses - Guilty pleasure and a justifiable rant

Ok ... firstly this is the ultimate guilty pleasure ... is it horribly horribly horribly bad that I love SuBo's Wild Horses?? Do you hate me now? Do you want to spit in my face and tear my hair out? Will you still trust my album choices and recommendations? Will you still keep reading this blog tomorrow? It wasn't that long ago when I spat chips at Australian Idol, in particular fat fuck's comments (hubris! hubris! hubris!) about Roshani's song choice when she performed the very same song!! So who's laughing all the way to the bank (unfotch its not Roshani) and who's crying in his "oops I lost my bra" cornflakes!

Amazing Grace - Boy George - revitalised?

Ok ... maybe a bit of downtime being the pecker checker at Her Majesty's Jika Jika has recharged and revitalised dear old George. He has a new song out called Amazing Grace that isn't a trailblazer by any means ... but is oddly comforting in a sort of Gay Sauna in the early 90s kind of way ... you know when they still played videos of psychedelic fractals or tom and jerry cartoons spliced with old skool porn shots from the 50s ... anyhoo ... check it out ...

A Rumble and an Eyeball - Yeah Yeah Yeahs at the Forum

Ok ... the new year started off with a bang ... several actually ... each spewing forth a shower of sparkly red "Y"s - it was the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at The Forum ...

 
Now it wasn't the greatest gig ever ... although it comes close to textbook perfection. It had volume, colour, charisma, audience participation and even an attenuated attempt at teenage rebellion when a skinny jeaned indie flop lit a cigarette (whoo ... edgy maaan!!).



The Stage was a big eye ball (and if you've got that Glass Onion tune running in your head right now ... then wow I'm impressed). And during Zero (or was it Heads will roll?) they rolled out 2 massive beachballs with an eyeball on each like the one up on stage ... and we pushed it round the auditorium ... I know cheesy ... but so much fun. I couldn't get a decent photo though.

Karen O always looks like she's having the best time just with herself, she climbed into the audience at one point and got some of the punters to do some woo-oohs into the mic ... I'm amazed at the fact that she pretty much carries ALL the vocals. The boys simply play instruments ... they don't supply any BVs. Brian Chase looked particularly geeky behind his sticks ... but what power ... and the little powerhouse emo Nick Skinner on guitars is exactly that. But all of KO's raspy screaming and swallowing of the microphone is surely going to take its toll one day.

 

But in the meantime I was happy that she did some of my favs like Maps, Hysteric, Y Control, Gold Lion. But Cheated Hearts certainly was a revelation for me last night. I think we need to re-assess Show your Bones.

Chorizo Cake

Ok ... just a quick one before I pop off to bed. The next couple of days are going to be huge ... but then its sadly back to the grind on Monday. Tomorrow is J's birthday party during the day and then R's mega African send off. Sunday is Yeah Yeah Yeahs day!!

So our main contribution to the H's New Years Eve Cocktail party was a chorizo cake. A recipe that I culled from Tessa Kiros' Piri Piri and Starfish. This is ostensibly one of those beautifully photographed and designed coffee table cookbooks. But if you can score a cheap copy, please do. The recipes are fantastic and surprisingly easy to follow and prepare.

 

I'm not one for baking but this is one of those mix it all in a bowl and plomp in a tray type of recipes. And really anything chorizo is delicious so it was a no-brainer. Except for the fact that it was 37 degrees and not really conducive to having any kind of oven-ish activity.

Simply put its just flour, milk, eggs, baking powder, butter and pinch of salt for the batter. Mix all of this up with beaters (or by hand if you're a bit of a masochist).

 

Dice the Chorizo and some thickly cut Prosciutto and bung it in the mixture.

Its pretty much ready for the oven soon after that. It takes roughly about 40-50 mins. But watch it. The fat does bubble up on top and it looks like the cake is still wet, but in actual fact is brown under all of that and cooked.

 

Not quite sure if this was a resounding success. It was simply too hot for eating to begin with ... so a long cool drink was more on the cards. We also made an eggplant and capiscum jam as well as some eggplant and mozarella cheese croquettes.

 

Oh and I have been remiss on not showing you a pic of M's mini white choccy plum puds. So here is a snap.

 

Righto. Thats it for now. I'll just finish off listening to Jon Hopkin's Insides (which has made it into several Top 2009 lists including Boomkat's and Popmatters) and then its bed for me. Good Night Australia.

Avatar - the mouths we could feed

Ok ... so we just watched Avatar in all its 3D Imax glory. A film reputed to have cost about 500 million smackeroos!

For those without a conscience, all that moolah translates wonderfully on screen. The CGI is near perfect and the 3D thrills are jaw droppingly splendid. Some of the set pieces are a marvel to behold ... when Jake falls into the water, the drag of the tide is palpable ... when Jake chooses his Leonoptery the flight scene that ensues is gut-wrenchingly believable ...

The story itself is nothing new. Its Miliary Might and Corporate Vigour against Mother Earth and all its pantheistic variants. Unfortunately, the predictable Hollywood ending will have you believe any kind of balance can only be redressed by acts of nihilistic violence, transparently disguised as the good forces of nature winning over Man's inherent tendency to corrupt and destroy.

This is dissappointing. Am I being too precious about it all? Well ... go see it ... I recommend you do. And certainly on an IMAX screen in 3D ... then let me know if I am misguided in saying that Violence won out in the end ... but just don't accuse me of oversimplifying things ... not when we're talking about a Hollywood blockbuster like this.

We're also charring some eggplant over the open flame of the stove ... oh and cranking up Queen's "A Night at the Opera" on the stereo.
